I read an email from a senior of us in Malaysia, graduated from Egypt last night which was posted in the 4th year's blog. I was soOoo excited and feeling like getting new refreshed spirit from what she was saying. She is now doing HOs (housemanship) in Hospital Serdang. And some of my favourite sentences are:
"...So the bottom line is, you have to study hard when you are in medical school! All the knowledge is essential in making the correct diagnosis and managing your patients. So siapa2 yang ada extra money tu, invest in classes rather than travelling, there will be a time when you can travel around the world. Focus on your priority which is to study!
Oh yeah, before I forget, the myths about HOs being so busy that you don't have time to eat are all not true! Believe it or not, I lunch everyday, and a proper lunch that is, nasi with so many lauk! Again, it boils down to how you manage your work. I am telling you this so that you are not scared about entering your HO days because the last time, I was told that I won't have time to eat! Just be optimistic about life and stay positive...!"
Yeah, thats what i've been thinking of and the reason why i dont really bother to plan for any vacation during winterbreak or summer break. its even more worthwhile to stay at home and preparing for finals or just take a break at home before starting new semester. ops, going back to Malaysia is for sure a must laa kan during summer..
i've heard of those myths too.. and its probably true and probably not. some people were just trying to scared us so that we stay focus and some might also just want to comfort us for not being so stressed with it. What so ever the reason is, the only thing i know, i have stepped in this field and there is no more turning back. believe it or not, i have to walk on straight and choose my own path whenever i come across any junction. who cares of those myths kan.. and no matter how hard it will be soon, i'll just have to go through. That is why i have to be well prepared by now.. hehee.. no more cries for small small things!
"...So here, I would like to sarankan to my adik2 to study really hard when you are in medical school. Because when you work, you are expected to know everything! No one will guide you and tell you, "ok, listen to this, this is crepitations, this is rhonchi, this is a murmur..." you are expected to know that!!! So while you are in medical school, you have to start learning about all that..."
I remember the time when i managed to have a very short but senseful conversation with a dentist of mine last year (which i admired since i was a kid) for regular check before coming back to Egypt. And kept his words in my mind ever since i feel like giving up on some tiny little thing that we have to learn for no reason. For example, taking biochemistry and histology subject and all those detailed informations in physiology and anatomy that we have to memorize. By logical thinking, we used so said this kan.. "macamlaa nanti nak terangkan semua details ni kat patients.. terang sikit2 sudah.. xke lagi parah patient tu nanti kalau cerita segala enzyme, regulations and pathway ni.. macamlaa banyak sangat masa nak terangkan satu-satu kat semua patients.." (baik korang mengaku.. kan kan kan?) but conversation with him taught me a lot about the value that we as a doctor (insyaAllah) have to pay before people give us the responsibility to hold the patients life. its about LIFE and DEATH tau! we cant simply take the responsibility with the certificate that we got without having the best quality that we should present in front of everyone. Dr. Ridzam said..
".. no matter how hard your course will be soon, you have to go through every single thing. there are times that you might can just predict the questions and just memorize those expected thing. but be sure, Allah dah amanatkan u to learn everything, so you must be sure that you learned the lessons very well. not to just study for examination and got the degree. If u want the barakah with you, at least read every single thing that you are supposed too.. that is what i did and this is who i am now.."
ohh.. sangat menusuk hati waktu tu.. dahlaa tengah semangat tinggi nak mulakan hari2 baru di Egypt ni.
And the next time i attended his clinic after a year being here, i was pleased to have his usual sweet smile while i was telling him about my life here and i hope that deep inside he is proud of me..he inspires me a lot. (handsome taw doc ni even dah tua).
